Name: Ashley Westwood
Decisions, decisions. We do like giving out awards, promise! Although this one certainly took some thought. But Aston Villa’s perfect Valentine’s Day date would have to be Ashley Westwood.
The 25-year-old, who began his career at the widely renowned successful youth academy of League One Crewe Alexandra, has developed and been nurtured into a classy defensive midfielder during his three-and-a-half year spell at Villa Park.
Westwood; who cost the Midlands outfit just £2m, is another player of Premier League pedigree who you could categorise as an English top-flight bargain having gone on to make 111 league appearances for the Villans.
Highly-rated as a young defensive midfielder; Westwood played a crucial role in Villa’s end of season relegation escape last term after scoring inside the opening minute during his side’s significant 3-1 victory over Hull City to all but secure their Premier League status for another campaign.
For someone who compares himself to that of England international and Manchester United star Michael Carrick, Westwood has done well for himself since leaving his playing days in League Two for one of the world’s most prestigious and competitive divisions in world football.
With age still certainly on his side, Villan fans have high hopes for Westwood’s future impact at the club given his decision to pen a new five-year contract before the start of the 2015-16 campaign, with his stature at the club bound to become even more imperative if Remi Garde’s men do eventually drop into the Championship this May.
