Leicester City are making their mark on the world map
9th February 2016

In this craziest of crazy Premier League seasons, can it get any crazier?

Exactly 12 months after Leicester City propped up the rest of the Premier League, we now sit on top of the English top-flight looking down at all below us.

At the start of the season, you would have got odds of 5000-1 on Leicester City winning the title. Now we are the bookies favourite.

To show just how crazy this season is; no team/sportsman has ever won anything when they have backed by such odds as that from the start.

Robert Huth scored twice on Saturday to help Leicester City defeat their nearest title rivals Manchester City 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

As well as writing for Shoot Football; I also do blogs for a national newspaper online and an exclusive online paper. Add to that being the Leicester City fanzine contributor for a National UK sports radio station, I have noticed the interest growing weekly for all things Leicester City.

With a top four finish and probable UEFA Champions League place looking more likely, interest in Leicester City across Europe was growing each week. Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez were starting to be compared with the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as well as being linked with their respective clubs.

But even I was taken back at the weekend when I got an email requesting a telephone interview from a sports radio station in Melbourne… Yes that is Melbourne, AUSTRALIA!

Now we all know Australians; are, on the whole, a happy bunch of people. Well lets face it, it’s not a bad place to have to spend your life, and add to that I was being interviewed by breakfast DJ’s who have to be the happiest people on the planet.

More nervous than normal; listening to the intro piece of Vardy scoring, my smile was as wide as the English channel.

I suddenly went into hyper mode as I got caught up in the interview. Francis and Ox, as they are known, could certainly give Alan Brazil a few lessons on being cheerful on a radio sports breakfast show.

But the point is; and I go back to an earlier question, how crazy is it that what Leicester City have achieved is causing such interest as far away as the other side of the world?

If you put aside; if you are not a Leicester fan, your loyalty to your own club which is a given, we appear to be fast becoming everybody’s favourite second team.

I even received this Facebook message from a Geordie this weekend:

“Your club is the reason I love football.. My fellow Newcastle fans would hate me for saying this, but I hope you beat us when we play each other later in the season.. Also I loved that 3-nil gesture Vardy made to the Man City fans.”

Add to that; the true Geordie was saying much the same on his YouTube channel, and as a Leicester fan you can’t help but pinch yourself.

Whatever happens or wherever we finish in the league; this is the season, above even last season and the great escape, that has put Leicester City on the map.

The worldwide map that is!
