Torres’ form was a huge disappointment to Chelsea and their supporters.

The majestic ‘El Nino’, who had been lighting up the Premier League for four years prior to his record-breaking move to Chelsea, was part of one of the most publicised Premier League transfers of all-time in 2011.

Having scored 65 times in 102 Premier League appearances for Liverpool, the massive fee initially appeared to be justified.

However, Torres had the start at Chelsea that no striker wants after just moving teams – the goal-drought. The Spaniard went eight games before netting his first goal for the Blues and pundits were already on his case by that stage. In the 2011/12 season, Torres started just 20 Premier League matches for Chelsea and scored just six times.

The fans began to lose faith in the man who they had signed to succeed Didier Drogba. Torres did manage to partially silence critics when he was reunited with Rafael Benitez, who managed him at Liverpool. The former (and current) Atletico Madrid forward struck on 22 occasions that term, but it was not enough to dig him out of the hole that he was in.

Jose Mourinho arrived at Stamford Bridge that summer and pleased the fans by dropping him from the starting line-up. Torres was then offloaded in 2014 and has failed to make an impact on the European stage since.
