Arsenal are reportedly ready to make a £9m January swoop for World Cup winning defender Benedikt Howedes.

The Premier League leaders, who face Sunderland in the FA Cup on Saturday, are poised to table an offer for the Schalke centre-half later this month.

The 27-year-old, who has 32 international caps for Germany, has scored one goal in 16 appearances in all competitions for the Bundesliga outfit this season.

Howedes, who was part of the Germany squad that lifted the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, is thought to be a long-term admirer of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.
