Newcastle United could hand a deal to England international Michael Carrick this summer, according to The Times.

The Premier League outfit, who currently sit just one point above the bottom three in 17th spot, are thought to be closely monitoring the midfielder’s situation at Manchester United until the end of the 2015-16 campaign.

The 34-year-old, who has 34 international caps for the Three Lions since May 2001, has failed to score in 24 appearances in all competitions for Louis van Gaal’s side so far this season.

Carrick, who arrived at Old Trafford from Tottenham back in 2006 in a deal worth up to £18.6m, is out of contract with the Red Devils this summer and the report suggests he has yet to be informed of whether the club will be offering him an extension anytime soon.

If Carrick fails to win a new deal with United, Magpies boss Steve McClaren will look to snap up the England ace on a free transfer.
